Guide: Leganto for Teachers
Leganto for Teachers

Leganto is the platform used to manage the recommended bibliographies for courses at institutions that form part of Universitat Ramon Llull.
With Leganto, you can create, update, maintain and share the recommended bibliography for your course guides/DOAs directly from Moodle (integrated into your course) or via the Leganto web interface.
Leganto links each reference to the library catalogue, making it easier to access the resource (if available in digital format), reserve physical materials, download or view them, depending on the type of document and its availability. It also allows users to add and cite resources from outside the library (lecturers’ notes, websites, articles, news items, blogs, etc.)
Organise your lists according to your needs and manage them in collaboration with the other teachers responsible for the subject.
In addition, Leganto makes it easy for students to access the bibliography via Moodle; with just a few clicks, they can view the full text if a digital version is available, or check availability and reserve the physical copy.
How to use Leganto
- Link your Mendeley and Zotero accounts to add citations in Leganto
Go to Settings > Reference Managers > Add Citation Managers > Mendeley/Zotero and enter your details.
- Install «Cite it» in your browser’s bookmarks bar
Go to Settings > Cite it and follow the instructions for your browser.
From then on, you’ll be able to import citations from your reference manager or from any website that supports it.
Within your list, click +Add > New item and select your preferred option. You can add citations:
- From all types of physical/online resources
- By searching the Library’s discovery tool (Discovery)
- Web resources via Cite it / Cítelo
- From your Leganto Favourites Collection
- By uploading attachments
- By filling in the blank form
- Create sections and reorder them
Go to +Add > New section, then drag them to change the order between them. You can also select a section and click the up and down arrows to move it to where you want. - Reorder citations
This works in the same way as for sections: by dragging or selecting the citation. You can also reorder them all automatically by clicking […] next to the list name > Reorder items within sections and choosing the criteria. - Add tags to citations
Edit the quote and, from Item Actions, add tags from a predefined list. - Set display periods for quotes
Use the Hide from students and Due date checkboxes to limit the display period. - Delete obsolete sections/quotes
From […] > Delete section/item, you can delete what you no longer need.
The lists are published by default. All students can view the appointments, but they will not be able to access subscription-based resources unless they are logged in, nor download attachments unless they are enrolled on the course.
Most appointments will be visible to students immediately. In some cases, the IQS Library will need to review the details before authorising them. Please contact us if you would like us to speed up the process.
FAQs and usage guidelines
Prioritise linking to library resources (e-books, articles, etc.); this helps to maintain links and check their availability (Add > Search the library). At the same time, it reduces the risk of breaching licences by uploading files to the Virtual Campus, Moodle, Microsoft Teams or Leganto.
You can add library resources (e-books, articles, physical documents), web links and other materials, and organise them by topic or week (Add > Search the library).
Link all the e-books for your course in Leganto (Add > Search for library), whether they are paid or open access.
These links are checked and updated if the distributor has changed the access URL.
If, on the other hand, you have links to URLs in static documents within Moodle, you may lose access to the resource at some point.
Link the articles you will be using in your course in Leganto (Add > Search the library) rather than uploading documents to Moodle.
If we have access via the Library, we will provide access to the original source of the information for download.
If we do not have access, we will obtain a legal copy that allows for distribution to students.
You must submit your request by following the steps set out in the Acquisitions and Subscriptions Guide. Once the case has been approved, the IQS Library will acquire the relevant licences and upload the legal document to Leganto for the duration of the licence.
Leganto restricts access to the attached documents to students enrolled on the course only, so only those students should access the case.
Once the licence has expired, only the case citation will remain accessible.
As a best practice, it is better to link to legitimate resources (library/open access) using the Add > Search the library option, rather than uploading documents, as uploading PDFs (e.g. downloaded from databases) may infringe licences or copyright.
Please ensure that the material is your own or that you have the necessary permissions. The Library team will also need to carry out checks, and the document will not appear on the list until we have done so.
If the chapter is cited in the DOA and its digitisation does not infringe copyright, the Library will take care of uploading it to Leganto.
If the digitisation does not infringe copyright, the Library will upload it to Leganto.
Leganto allows you to specify who can view the list. In IQS, resource citations are visible to all users without restriction; links to subscription-based electronic resources will be available to all IQS users; and digital or digitised materials hosted on Leganto itself (articles, chapters, case studies) will be available only to students enrolled in the course listed.
Yes! Leganto is designed to integrate with the LMS and be accessed from the course page.
By default, in every Moodle course, there is a link to the Leganto list, under the heading “Basic Bibliography”.
Furthermore, you can link to the Leganto list via any other channel (Virtual Campus, Microsoft Teams, email, etc.), and there will be no issues with access, as it is controlled in accordance with the answer to the previous question.
Yes, and that is what is recommended: Leganto attempts to locate resources available in the library and generate stable links (link resolver), which makes access easier and reduces the risks associated with uploading PDFs.
Yes, students can interact with the list (for example, by marking readings, commenting or suggesting resources).
Leganto allows you to copy and reuse reading lists, and then update them for new editions of the course, so you can make the most of the work done for previous years.
At the start of the academic year, the Library makes a copy of the previous year’s reading list and makes the necessary changes to bring it into line with the new Syllabus. If you notice that your list is not up to date, please contact us so we can prioritise it.
Remember that you won’t have to review all the materials every term, as the Library manages this for you:
– Materials that do not require special licences will continue to have the links/attachments on the list.
– Materials that require new licences (case studies) will be listed but without access to the final document until you submit the purchase request for the new term.
If you manage all resources in Leganto rather than in Moodle, we ensure that the available documents will always comply with current regulations.
